Abstract

A survey was conducted from September 25 to 30, 1969 toward 1 adult of who was living at 1286 houses of Haekee-dong, Dongdaemoon: ku, Seoul on knowledge, attitudes and practices for prevention of cancer.
As the result of thissurvey, the following conclusions wear obtained.
1. Total respondents were 996 adults.
2. As a summary of knowledge about cancer, majority of respondents had, known several kinds of cancer vaguely but they did not have correct understanding ofit.
3. In the response to the question "From what sourse did you hear about cancer?" 40.9
as the highest rate, answered "from neighbours" which seemed to be not reliable source of knowledge with regard to cancer.
4. The respondents who answered "cancer is conta-gious" occupied 6.9%, while cancer is nDt contagious were 80.2%.
The respondents who answered "don¢¥t know exactly" were 12.9/. There was a trend that the higher the educational level the more the answers are likely to be "cancer is not contagious".
5. In the answer to the question "Would you be willing to work next to someone who has cancer?", "No. " occupied 23.4% "No, strongly" 5.3% and "Yes," turned out to be 71.3% of the respondents. The lower educational level of the respondents the rate of "No, strongly" turned out to be higher.
6. Those who answered "cancer is preventable" were 47.5% and "Not preventable" were 21.9%. The respondents who . are below 35 years of age answered more about "cancer is preventable" than those who are over 35 years of age.
7. In the rerponse to the question "By what method cancer is prevented?", 75.3% of the respondents answered "early diagnosis" as the highest rate.
8. The respondents who know the symptoms of cancer were 32,6% of total 996 respondents. The symptom they mentioned most was malaise that has not much related to seven danger signals of cancer. The next symptoms mentioned "Irregular bleeding or discharge from any natural body opening with 48.6;; and "any change in normal bowel habits" with 45.6%. Those respondents who are 3140 Years of age group seemed to be known well all of the sympt omsef cancer.
9. Those who answered the need of regular physical examination to find out the disease of cancer were 81.9%, and those who mentioned "Not needed" were 10.3%.
10. Those who had physical examination for cancer occupied only 6.9% of the total respondents.
